Canberra developed rapidly from the 1950s and Modernism, with its focus on design rather than decoration, influenced its architecture. Think of the Shine Dome (Grounds1959); the ‘Round House’ (Jelinek 1957); the Dickson Library (Taglietti 1968); and even Kanangra Court (Collard Clark and Jackson in 1962) as pictured above.
So, what happened in the 1920–50 architectural zeitgeist, that led to this?
How do Canberra’s FCC dwellings (see below) show elements of the move towards Modernism. What led to these major shifts and changes in style, materials and even construction? And what was the result?
Eric Martin AM, recognised nationally and internationally for his expertise in conservation of heritage structures, adaptive reuse and accessibility, will explain all, over a light lunch, on 23 April.
Come along and find out more about the history of our architecture.
