LOSS OF COMMUNITY SPACE etc.

It’s time to make a submission to the Standing Committee on Environment and Planning inquiry on Draft Major Plan Amendment to the Territory Plan 07 – Former Braddon Bowls Club (DPA-07).

And what is the problem with this you might ask?

It’s loss of Community Space again, and again!

We urge you to sign the ePetition with the Legislative Assembly closing this Thursday 28th of May. These petitions need 500 signatures for the Legislative Assembly to take notice, and the more signatures the more heft. Any resident of the ACT can sign this petition.

The petition is here:

https://epetitions.parliament.act.gov.au/details/e-pet-044-26

Extra details: the Syzygy Group wants to construct two buildings, across 3 to 6 storeys comprising a hotel with 59 units, commercial accommodation with 43 units, indoor/outdoor recreation facility, 2 level basement parking for 128 cars, a bar, function space, public retail etc. This is, and should stay as community space!

Not surprisingly, the residents of Braddon are concerned that what is proposed is fundamentally inconsistent with the surrounding low-density residential area. The design is considered visually intrusive and unsympathetic, particularly in proximity to heritage sites such as Ainslie School and the Ainslie Arts Centre i.e. Gorman House.

Residents are concerned about the increase in traffic and rat-running (sound familiar); noise from late-night activity in the bar and conference centre; over-shaddowing of the tennis courts; and the loss of potential green space and potential tree canopy.

There are also questions about whether this proposal complies with the ACT planning framework for the other half of the block. Community anxiety has led to action and to a Legislative Assembly Inquiry into DPA-07 – Former Braddon Bowls Club. It is scheduled to report on 11 September 2026.
